We begin with a careful evaluation of your symptoms, oral structures, and airway-related factors. When appropriate, treatment may include a custom mandibular advancement device created with digital impressions. We also offer laser therapy for certain snoring concerns and coordinate with physicians or sleep specialists when medical testing or additional treatment is needed.

Our goal is to make the process understandable, comfortable, and manageable for your daily routine.

When Should You Seek Help for Snoring or Sleep Apnea Symptoms?

Occasional snoring is common, but frequent or disruptive snoring can sometimes be associated with sleep-disordered breathing. It is especially important to seek an evaluation if snoring occurs alongside other symptoms.

Common warning signs include:

  • Loud or frequent snoring
  • Observed pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Gasping or choking during the night
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Irritability or changes in mood
  • Waking frequently or feeling unrested after sleep

These symptoms do not confirm sleep apnea on their own. However, they may indicate that further evaluation is appropriate.

At High Park Smile Studio, we can assess oral and airway-related factors and discuss whether coordination with a physician or sleep specialist is recommended.

How Can a Dentist Help With Sleep Apnea?

Dentists can play an important role in identifying signs of sleep-disordered breathing and providing oral appliance therapy to appropriate patients.

During your visit, Dr. Bhoomika Piplani may evaluate your bite, jaw position, oral structures, and airway-related anatomy. We may also review previous sleep study results or medical recommendations if you have already been evaluated by a sleep physician.

A formal diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea is generally made through medical sleep evaluation and testing. If additional testing is needed, we can coordinate with your healthcare providers so your dental treatment works alongside your overall sleep care.

Sleep Apnea Treatment Options

Treatment recommendations depend on the severity of your condition, your medical history, comfort, and individual needs.

Mandibular advancement devices

A mandibular advancement device is a custom oral appliance worn while you sleep. It gently positions the lower jaw forward, which may help keep the airway more open during sleep.

We use digital impressions to create an appliance that fits your bite comfortably. Once the appliance is fitted, adjustments can be made gradually to balance comfort and effectiveness.

Oral appliance therapy may be an option for certain patients with obstructive sleep apnea or chronic snoring, particularly when recommended as part of a coordinated sleep treatment plan.

Laser therapy for snoring

Some patients may benefit from laser therapy, which is designed to address the soft tissues involved in snoring. Treatment recommendations vary depending on the cause of the snoring and the patient’s airway anatomy.

Laser therapy is not a substitute for proper evaluation of suspected sleep apnea. If your symptoms suggest an underlying sleep-related breathing disorder, appropriate medical testing may still be recommended.

CPAP and medical treatment

For patients with more severe sleep apnea, a sleep physician may recommend CPAP or other medical treatment.

Our role is to collaborate with your medical providers as needed. In some cases, dental treatment and medical sleep care may be used together.

What Happens During a Sleep Apnea Evaluation?

Your visit begins with a discussion of your symptoms, sleep habits, medical history, medications, and any previous sleep studies.

Dr. Bhoomika Piplani may also evaluate your teeth, bite, jaw position, and oral structures. An intraoral camera can help us show you areas of your mouth that may be relevant to treatment planning. A panoramic X-ray may also be used when additional information about the teeth or jaws is clinically useful.

If oral appliance therapy appears appropriate, digital impressions can be used to create a precise bite model for appliance fabrication.

Throughout the process, we explain what we find and what the next steps may involve.

What Happens During Oral Appliance Treatment?

If a mandibular advancement device is recommended, treatment usually begins with a digital scan and bite record.

Once your appliance is ready, we check its fit and show you how to insert, remove, clean, and store it properly.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Digital impressions and bite records
  • Custom appliance fitting
  • Gradual adjustments when needed
  • Follow-up visits to assess comfort and fit
  • Ongoing monitoring of symptoms and appliance use

Follow-up is an important part of oral appliance therapy. Your bite, comfort, sleep symptoms, and appliance condition may need to be reviewed periodically.

We can also discuss whether follow-up testing with your physician or sleep specialist is appropriate to assess treatment effectiveness.

What Are the Benefits of Treating Sleep-Related Breathing Problems?

Effective treatment may help improve both nighttime sleep and daytime functioning.

Depending on the individual and the underlying cause of symptoms, patients may notice improvements such as:

  • Reduced snoring
  • More restful sleep
  • Less daytime sleepiness
  • Improved concentration
  • Fewer morning headaches
  • Better energy during the day

Results vary, so follow-up and appropriate medical coordination are important.

Lifestyle factors can also influence sleep quality. We may discuss habits such as alcohol use, sleep position, weight management, and general sleep hygiene when they are relevant to your treatment plan.

Is an Oral Appliance an Alternative to CPAP?

For some patients, yes. Oral appliance therapy can be an alternative treatment option for certain cases of obstructive sleep apnea, depending on severity and medical recommendations.

However, oral appliances and CPAP are not interchangeable for every patient. The most appropriate treatment depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, health history, and sleep study findings.

If you have already been prescribed CPAP or diagnosed with sleep apnea, we can work with your sleep physician to determine whether an oral appliance is appropriate.

Do You Need a Sleep Study Before Getting a Sleep Apnea Appliance?

If sleep apnea is suspected, medical sleep testing may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and determine its severity.

Patients who already have sleep study results should bring them to their appointment when possible. If testing has not yet been completed, we can discuss whether a referral or coordination with a sleep specialist is appropriate before proceeding with treatment.

How Long Does It Take to Adjust to a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance?

Adjustment time varies from patient to patient. Some people adapt quickly, while others need additional time and small adjustments to appliances.

Follow-up appointments allow us to monitor comfort, bite changes, appliance fit, and the consistency with which you wear the device.

The goal is to create a treatment approach that is both effective and realistic for long-term nightly use.
